Selection Sunday 2018: Providence is 10 Seed in West Region Playing 7 Seed Texas A&M

The Providence Friars are dancing for a 5th straight season. The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee placed Providence in the West region on the 10 line and the Friars are heading to Charlotte to take on 7 seed Texas A&M on Friday. The game will tip at 12:15pm and air on CBS. This extends Providence’s school record for consecutive appearances that they broke last year. Ed Cooley has now tied Dave Gavitt for the most NCAA Tournament appearances by a Providence coach in school history at 5.

Providence enters the field of 68 off a gritty run to the Big East Tournament championship game by defeating Creighton and Xavier in overtime on Thursday and Friday. Villanova would need overtime to defeat the Friars on Saturday night in front of a sold out Madison Square Garden to capture the crown. It’s amazing what some well-timed wins can do for a team with Providence firmly on the bubble and likely needing to win their final regular season game against St. John’s and at least their matchup against Creighton in the Big East Tournament. Beating St. John’s avoided the bad home loss but the wins over Creighton and Xavier on the neutral floor at MSG gave Providence two additional Quadrant 1 wins to bring their season total in that category to 5.

Providence Quadrant 1 Details

The Selection Committee released their official 1-68 seed list and what is important to note there is that Providence ranked 35th there. At face value that would translate to a 9 seed. However, because Villanova and Xavier both got 1 seed the Friars couldn’t be an 8 or 9 seed after playing both teams 3 times this season. The earliest the bracketing procedures allow for Providence to play either the Wildcats or Musketeers would be the regional final. So, Providence got scrubbed. The committee moved Providence off the 9 seed line and placed them as a 10.
